In addition to the tragic events of the Inquisition that gave Zugarramurdi the epithet 'the town of the witches', the Museum paints a portrait of 17th-century Basque society and its magical universe of myths, medicinal plants and ancestral rituals.
According to legend, this impressive karst tunnel, located less than 500 metres from the town centre, was the site of akelarres, the ritual festivals seen as devil worship by the Inquisition.
There is a hiking trail crossing the four villages of the area. The path, signed by small blue horses drawn on rocks, is named “pottokaren bidea” (the way of the horse), located between grassland and forests.
