Cataloged as one of the most beautiful villages of France, Sare is located between the sea and the mountains, at the base of the Basque mountain La Rhune. Sare, with the villages of Ainhoa, Urdax and Zugarramurdi, form the territory of Xareta

Sare (Sara in Basque) counts 2500 inhabitants, and is cataloged as one of the most beautiful villages of France.

This village, surrounded by mountains (La Rhune, 905 meters) and landlocked with the spanish Navarra, has a border with 32 kilometers long. The nearest beach, in Saint Jean de Luz, is at 14 kilometers from Sare.

Over its history (World Wars, and Carlist War) and its past activities (smuggling), Sare always had a special relationship with the different provinces on both side of the border.

GETTING HERE

Must–sees in Sare:

The prehistoric caves of Sare, totally different from those of Zugarramurdi, with a guided tour with lights and sound. The main theme is prehistory, because of the remains of this time founded in this cave. The tour also includes the origins of the Basque people with the researches of the anthropologist Jose Miguel de Barandiaran. For more information
The train of La Rhune : it is the highest mountain in the area with its 905 meters, where you can get to the top by an authentic vintage rack railway train. The climb is very bucolic. When it is sunny, the landscape from the top is spectacular : all the coast from the Landes until Biscaya and also the chain of Pyrenees. For more information
